Structural Isomers

Isomers are two different compounds with identical molecular formulas. We saw this previously with two compounds with the formula C4H10, n-butane and isobutane. These two compounds share the same molecular formula, yet they are different, distinct compounds. These two compounds are structural isomers of each other. Structural isomers are also sometimes called constitutional isomers. Structural isomers have different structures. They usually look like a piece was pulled off of a molecule and placed in a different location. The actual structure is changed.
