Stability of Alkenes

Cis vs. Trans

Trans alkenes are usually more stable than cis. In trans-alkenes, the bulkier alkyl groups are farther away from each other and do not bump into each other.

Saytzeff's Rule

We’ve learned Saytzeff’s rule previously. Saytzeff’s Rule states that the more highly substituted double bonds are usually more stable than less substituted double bonds. So, more stable alkenes are those that have more carbon groups of the four groups on the C=C.
